Collecting your hire vehicle

Whether you’re hiring a car, van or scooter, you just need a clean driving licence that covers the vehicle you’re hiring.

Don’t worry if you have points on your driving licence. You can still hire a car in the UK if you have six or less points.

You must have held your driving licence for at least three years and it must be from the country you live in.

Please remember to bring your driving licence with you when you collect your vehicle.

You just need to bring your:

•Driving licence
•Credit card (if it's a high value vehicle, perhaps two for added security. Please check your booking)
•Proof of any discount (such as a frequent flyer or Avis Preferred card)
•Photo ID for international rentals (such as a passport or driving licence)

If you’re an Avis Preferred member, simply bring your membership card and your driving licence.

Lastly, if you booked online or over the phone, don’t forget to bring a copy of your email confirmation showing your unique booking reference.

Yes - the additional driver will also need to be present to show their driving licence in person as well.

If you’re driving abroad, you and your additional driver will also need to bring your International Driving Permits.

But in some countries, such as China, you can only drive if you have a Chinese driving licence. It’s always worth checking with the location first.

Discover whether you need an International Driving Permit for your trip and how to apply on the gov.uk website

Book from the Select Series and the car you pick is the car you get. On the rare occasion we’re unable to provide the exact model, we’ll refund its cost. We understand you’ll still need the extras you chose for your journey, so these won’t be refunded.

In addition to a refund for your hire vehicle, you will also receive another hire car. We will try our best to provide you with an equally premium model, depending what’s available.

Remember to book your vehicle at least 72 hours ahead to ensure we have time to prepare your perfect model. Unfortunately we can’t guarantee you will get to drive the exact model you desire any sooner than this. Any refund is subject to you booking at least 72 hours before your journey.

You should always review the terms and conditions when you book, which include everything you need to know ahead of your journey.

Want to claim a refund? Please call our customer services team. Alternatively, email customer.service@avis.co.uk or complete this quick form. Make sure you have your booking or rental agreement number ready.

Collecting your hire vehicle is quick and effortless, because we don’t want to hold you up on your journey.

Remember to bring your driving licence and a credit card (or two cards where required - for high value vehicles).

We will then check your hire car for any existing damage. Once you are satisfied, simply sign the rental agreement. Then, the road is yours

What is a pre-authorisation?

It is a temporary hold on a specified amount against the available funds on your payment card. Please note-this is not an actual charged amount and no funds are taken.

Your payment card issuer may present a pre-authorisation as a pending transaction.

Yes, if you are driving abroad and the country requires it. But this alone isn’t enough to hire a vehicle. You also need a driving licence from your resident country.
